Dental Goals to Make & Keep in 2018

Posted .

Another great year has come to a close! Along with your regular New Year’s resolutions, Drs. Calpas, Hendrix, and Amundson recommend that you have a few dental resolutions. These goals can help your smile shine in the years to come!

Replace Your Toothbrush
Many people only replace their toothbrush when they go to the dentist and receive one for free. However, it is suggested that you replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Toothbrush bristles begin to become worn and frayed with time, so a fresh toothbrush can clean your teeth more efficiently.

Brush Your Teeth for a Full Two Minutes
Although most individuals only brush their teeth for about 45 seconds, it is important to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, at least twice a day. Two minutes is the optimal amount of time to brush teeth, as it allows enough time for you to thoroughly clean your teeth.

Brush at a Good Time
Brushing after meals is a great thing, however, we recommend that you wait for about 30 minutes. This is especially important if you ate something acidic, like lemons or soda. You can drink water or chew sugarless gum to clean the teeth a little while you wait to brush.

Don’t Use Your Teeth Like Tools
The teeth should never be used to tear or cut open packages. Do not use your teeth like scissors, as this can cause unnatural wear or otherwise damage them.

Visit Monticello Dental Center Regularly
Our dentists and team in Big Lake, Minnesota, stress the importance of coming into our office at least once every six months for regular cleanings and checkups. In addition, it is important that you keep any scheduled appointments for treatments like dental fillings. Skipping checkups can have dire circumstances, as our dentists will not have the chance to examine your teeth and gums for signs of decay and other issues.
